There are many people who are a regular when it comes to blood donation but when it comes to blood donation pregnancy then it is not a very good idea. When one is pregnant, they need to take a break and wait till the baby is born and then regain health to become eligible to donate again.

Now the question is why one cannot donate their blood when they are pregnant? Well, there is not concrete or proven reason behind that. The body produces at least 50 percent more blood when one is pregnant as compared to daily life. But still, it is not advisable to donate blood during this time. This is because; this blood is needed to support the baby’s life. If one donates blood during this tenure then they might put their baby’s life at risk. There is also a high chance that one can become anemic if they donate blood during pregnancy. This can also trigger premature delivery which is not good for the health of the baby.

In fact, one is not advised to donate blood till the time they are breastfeeding their child. Generally, new mothers should wait for at least nine months post delivery to donate blood, but if one is continuing to breastfeed after this period of time, then they need to wait until the time they stop breastfeeding. The infant is highly dependent upon the nutrients and vitamins in the breast milk, so if the mother donates blood during this time the baby might miss out on these vital nutrients.

If one is a regular donor, then there is a chance that they might donate blood when they are pregnant at a very early stage and is unaware of it. This mostly occurs at a very initial stage of pregnancy and so it does not raise any serious issue. But before every blood donation, there are normal tests done like blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin levels to check if everything is normal.

The only reason why a pregnant woman is ever asked to donate blood is when the gynecologists feel that they might require blood transfusion at the time of their delivery. This generally happens when one is under a high-risk pregnancy. In those cases, the mother develops a severe anemia, or there is a risk of excessive bleeding during the delivery. During complications, the doctor may receive blood from other sources but at the same time, they can ask the mother to store some of their blood beforehand.

It is also a common question that can a pregnant woman donate plasma or not and it is best to get the answer from a gynecologist as they can only know whether one is fit for it or not.
