How sugar affects the menstruation cycle?


The menstrual cycle is a regular change that occurs in the body of a woman that is required to get pregnant. This occurs in a series of activities and the events occur in a cycle starting the first day of menstruation. Various hormones affect this process. Therefore, any slight disturbance in the hormonal level can cause a problem in the cycle. The menstruation and menstrual cycle depends on various aspects other than hormones. The food we eat, the actions we perform also have a good effect on it. So, to maintain a healthy menstrual cycle one must follow a diet.
Hormones and menstrual cycle
Hormones are the chemical messengers of our body, which controls a number of actions. The reproductive hormones like - estrogen, progesterone, LH, FSH etc, control a menstrual cycle. During the cycle, the levels of hormones change required for the various stages of the cycle. Foods we eat go through the digestive system, which involves a number of enzymes. But it also triggers some hormones which in turn may cause some problems in the menstrual cycle when crosses a critical level.

The main hormone that is associated with the blood sugar level is insulin and glucagon. These two enzymes help to maintain the blood sugar level. Sugar and menstrual cycle get mixed because insulin has some structural resemblance to the ovarian hormones like progesterone. Due to this, a condition has been observed in which increased insulin in the blood caused premature ovulation. In some women it is seen that blood sugar level during ovulation is not the similar with the normal blood sugar level. Hormones of the menstrual cycle can blood sugar level and that's why diabetes affects the women's reproductive health.

Hormones of menstrual cycle interact with insulin and glucagon, which makes the body resistant to its own insulin or injected insulin. Due to this one may experience a rise in blood glucose level after the menstruation. This may be consistent over months or may vary. A rise in progesterone level can cause food cravings, which in turn disrupts the diabetes management. Blood sugar level and menstruation are interrelated.
 As menstruation affects the blood sugar level, blood sugar level also affects the menstruation cycle. Diabetes increases the chances of having longer menstruation, profuse blood secretion through the vagina and earlier menopause. It is now proved that sugar and ovulation pain are related. During periods women tend to have more and more food cravings, which include a heavy intake of sugar. It produces a variety of inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins. This hormone causes cramping by breaking down the endometrial lining.
