It
is suggested that women become part of a pap smear by the time they touch 21
years or it could be 3 years of them becoming sexually active. It is not a
diagnostic test, but it does go on to detect any form of abnormal cells in your
cervix. In fact abnormal pap and pregnancy have a strong relation. If you have
regular screening of pap tests, it detects chances of early detection coupled
with treatment of the same.
Being
worried is something that is quiet normal when you are told you have an
abnormal pap smear. However it does indicate that there is presence of
infection cells in your cervix. But be aware of the fact that abnormal cells
does not point to cancer in any manner. What it does mean that further course
of testing would be needed to underline any further problem or not. This form
of condition could arise due to recent sexual activity or any form of
infection. Once positive results emerge, it does indicate the presence of
cancer cells. Just take into account that it is a form of test and not full proof
conclusion.
It
is for sure that further course of evaluation is needed, and this would mean
another pap smear or a colposcopy (whereby with the help of a microscope you
would look into the cervix) A biopsy is also a solution where you remove a
small portion of the tissue from the cervix. The doctor is then going to
discuss the test results with you.
One
out of ten pap tests does indicate some form of abnormal function. It is
recommended that further form of testing may be needed to figure out whether you
have any form of infection or inflammation. Just be aware of the fact that HPV
is the main cause of cervical cancer. Many women who do receive treatment for
HPV have no chances of developing cervical cancer. In 2003, the FDA went on to
approve a test that could be done in the same time as a normal pap test. This
form of testing is recommended for all women who are above the age of 30 years
where the chances of HPV infection turning into pre cancer cells are on the
higher side.
Routine
check-ups post treatment is necessary to detect whether all abnormal cells of
the cervix have gone and more the cervix has healed completely. Timely
detection is the key to figure out whether any form of cancer develops or not.
The women will be advised within what duration they will need to undergo a
routine pap smear once again.
