How pH level affects fertility?

Do you have frustrated due to finding difficulty in conceiving? Delay in conceiving sometimes gives the pain to cause depression. Sometimes, the sperm does not get a favorable environment and result in infertility. And that environment is within you, your pH levels in pregnancy.

What is pH?

The pH denotes ‘potential of Hydrogen’ in the body fluid. It is a measuring unit of acidity or alkalinity of the substances soluble in water. The value of pH ranges between 1 and 14 with 7 as the neutral position denoting neither acidic nor alkaline. The values under 7 represent the acidity levels and that of above 7 represents alkaline levels. The level of acidity increases as the value below 7 decreases. Therefore, value 1 expresses the most acidic stage.

How does pH level help fertility?

We often leave attention to the pH level of our body fluid. The pH level of the body fluid has an immense role on the fertility. However, the human body has the mechanism within it to endure the variations in the pH level, though a major fall in the pH level causes a serious concern to the sperm disallowing it to survive into suchacidic vaginal environment. The sperm favors an alkaline environment instead of an acidic environment and thus the sperm thrives if the pH level is higher than 7 or more. Before fertilizing an egg, a sperm keeps on swimming through vaginal and cervical path before it reaches the fallopian tubes. If the vaginal and cervical path does not favor a sperm with an alkaline environment, the ejaculated sperm can’t reach the egg to fertilize because the highly acidic environment destroys the sperm. The pH of the vaginal path of a woman ideally ranges between 3.8 and 4.5 during the menstrual cycle and it ranges between 7 and 14 which is an ideal non-toxic situation to an ejaculated sperm to proceed to an ovulated egg and fertilize it and this is happened during ovulation period due to luteinizing hormonal stream.

What are the causes of raising body fluid’s pH?

Factors that affect the acidity level of vaginal and cervical passage includes:
  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Stress
  • Dehydration
  • Reduced or elevated hormone levels
  • Use of certain medications
  • Exposure to toxins of the environment
  • Use of toxic lubricants for sperm
  • Diet

No factor is less than the other but the diet is the most ardent agent responsible to reduce the pH level. Pizza, burger, white sugar, white flour, sugary drinks, junk food and processed food are highly acidic food which can push our overall pH level of the body to the lower range. And if the body pH level goes to the lower range, the mucus of the vaginal path is more acidic and under such a situation a sperm can’t survive.

How can the vaginal pH be examined?

There are many vaginal pH testing strips available in the regular medicine store.Pregistry suggests you buy such a strip and make a test during or close to ovulation to get a better result. It is easy to access and you can examine the pH level in a private place in your home. If the result is low, you should consult your doctor immediately.
